Q without U looks like a prank the tile bag plays. In English text, Q almost always drags a U behind it. In tournament Scrabble lists, that isn’t the whole story. There are legal Q-without-U words, they’re short, and they change how you treat the tile.
If your house dictionary is a school paperback from 1994, this article may not apply. Check. A lot of kitchen-table arguments are really dictionary arguments.
The words you actually need first
On the North American tournament family (TWL-style), the emergency set is small. Learn it cold:
- QI: the Chinese life-force spelling that tournament lists accept. Q + I. Two letters. This is the dump.
- QAT: the plant (also seen as KAT, CHAT in other senses; you want QAT as Q-A-T). Three letters. Q plus A and T, no U.
- QIS: plural of QI if your list allows the S hook.
You’ll meet others as you go: QADI, QAID, QOPH, QANAT, TRANQ, FAQIR, QINTAR, QINDAR, SHEQEL / SHEQALIM type forms, QWERTY, depending on edition and lexicon. Don’t try to swallow the whole rare-Q list in a night. If you can always see QI and QAT, you already solve most “no U” racks.
Collins (SOWPODS/CSW) adds more Q-without-U entries. If you play international lists, you have extra exits and extra challenge risk on TWL boards. Keep the sets apart.
Geometry beats vocabulary
Knowing QI does nothing if you never look for I’s.
When Q hits your rack and U doesn’t, your eyes should go to the board in this order:
- Open I you can play beside (or through) for
QI. - Open A plus access to T for
QAT, or an existingAT/TAyou can attach Q to. - An S hook on an existing
QI(QIS) or a parallel where Q pairs legally. - A U you can steal from the board: play through someone else’s U in
QUITE,EQUAL,QUILTfragments. - Dump Q on a low square as a last resort, or trade, depending on score and bag.
Example. Board has FISH in a corner and an isolated I in AIR in the middle. Rack: Q E N R S T L. No U.
The isolated I is the story. QI might score modestly. It also unloads Q and leaves ENRSTL, which can become something later. Playing through the I with a longer Q-word is rare without U. People stare at FISH because it’s a word they like, and they miss the I.
Using a U that’s already on the board
This is the other half of “no U on the rack.”
If the board shows U at the end of THRU (list-dependent word, but the geometry is what matters) or in the middle of CAUSE, you may be able to play Q adjacent to that U: QI isn’t the only pattern. QUA, QUI, QUE prefixes, QUAD, QUIT if the rest of the tiles cooperate.
Rack: Q A D I N E R with a board U sitting next to a double-word. QUAD through that U can be the whole point of the position. You didn’t have U in hand. You had Q and a board that supplied the partner.
Helpers that only anagram your rack will miss this. They don’t know about the U two squares over. Look at the board first, then type extra letters into an unscrambler if you must: include the board U in the bag only if you can actually reach it.
When you should not force the dump
Q on a triple-letter with a two-letter play is usually worth forcing. Q into a lane that hands the opponent a triple-word for their Z is not.
Trading: if the bag is fat, the board has no I, no U, no AT, and you’re holding Q plus other junk, an exchange that includes Q can be correct. Beginners never exchange Q. They also never stop holding it for four turns while their opponent bingoed twice.
Endgame: if the bag is empty and Q is unplayable, you will eat those points. Then any earlier cheap dump looks genius in hindsight. Count the remaining tiles. If four I’s and both U’s are already on the board, your odds of drawing a partner are not abstract. They’re bad.
Wordfeud and apps
Wordfeud language packs may allow QI or they may not. Some digital games lag paper tournament lists. The first time you play Q-without-U in an app, try QI on a throwaway turn in an unranked game and see. Don’t learn your app’s lexicon during a close ranked match.
If this site’s helper is generating from TWL06 or Collins, an app rejection means “different list,” not “the tool hallucinated letters.”
Boggle’s Qu cube is a different rule
Standard Boggle prints Qu on one cube. You don’t have a Q-without-U problem there. The cube is Q-U. QUIT uses that cube plus I and T. Scoring counts Qu as two letters.
Don’t import Scrabble Q-without-U habits into Boggle. There’s no lone Q to park on an I unless you’re on a variant set of dice.
Wordle almost never cares. Q answers exist (QUIET, QUEUE) and they’re U-ful. A Wordle Q-without-U answer would be the kind of NYT spike people talk about for a week. Don’t build your Wordle strategy around QAT.
Study: one afternoon, not a lifestyle
Write every Q-without-U word on your list that is length 2 to 4. That’s a short page. Recite them. Then take a blank grid, place a few I’s and A’s, and deal random racks with Q and no U. Play them out.
Use an unscrambler as the answer key after you commit. Search must-include Q, exclude U. Compare.
You’ll notice the same exits repeating: QI, QAT, board U, exchange. The exotic words (QINTAR and friends) show up rarely. Learn those when you see them in a game, not before you can find QI in two seconds.
A sample rack walkthrough
Rack: A I N Q S T V. Board: nothing spicy. An E here, a D there. One I already placed as part of HIT.
Unaided plan:
QInext to that I if the square before or after is empty and premium-or-at-least-not-awful.QATS/QATif an A-T pattern exists.QISif you play QI and the S hook is clean.VAIN,VANS,Qstill stuck: worse.
Helper check after you pick: did you miss QINTAS or some six that’s only on Collins? If you’re on TWL and the helper was on SOWPODS, ignore it. If you’re on the same list and you missed TRANQ with a board T-R-A-N, that’s a board-blindness note, not a flashcard of 20 rare Q words.
Social note
If you play QI at a family table, someone will challenge from principle. That’s fine. Look it up in the book you agreed to. If it isn’t there, take it off without a lecture about NASPA. If it is there, leave it. The word list is the rule, not the vibe of English.
